Hearing Aid Aftercare

How to care for your hearing aids

Taking care of your hearing aids is key to preserving high performance levels and a maximum life span. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to maintain regular care for your hearing aids at home through daily cleaning, minimising moisture, and careful storing.

Tips for all devices

Brush everyday

Use a cleaning brush to remove wax from your hearing aids and prevent build-up and potential damage. We recommend using a cleaning brush daily, either before you put them on for the day or after you take them out.

Use the cloth

Use a soft cloth to wipe dirt or debris off your hearing aids. A small, washable cloth in your cleaning kit is beneficial for maintaining your device’s performance and life span.

Avoid moisture

Avoid moisture by keeping your hearing aids away from water, steam, hairsprays, and other liquids.

Tips for specific devices

Receiver in Canal (RIC)

If ear wax builds up, the dome that sits on the end of the receiver, as well as the white filter underneath, will need replacing. Prevent build-up where possible, and when needed, remove the filter and replace the dome.

Behind the Ear (BTE)

These hearing aids are known for their curved design and clear tube, and – as the name suggests – sit comfortably behind the ear. Maintain your device by using a brush or ear pick to remove built-up wax from the sound outlet.

Custom

Follow your device’s instructions to maintain custom hearing devices, and keep a cleaning kit ready with an ear pick and soft cloth to prevent build-up of earwax, dust and debris.

Hearing Aid Repair & Adjustment

How to solve common problems

My hearing aid/s have no sound

If your hearing aid/s have no sound, they may have a low or dead battery, the device may be switched off, or the sound channel may be blocked.

– Your device has low or dead batteries: replace the battery or, if your device is rechargeable, place it on its charger.
– Your device is switched off: switch on the hearing device or check that the battery door is closed correctly.
– The sound channel is blocked: Clean the sound channel.

If none of the above solutions help, your hearing aid repairs may be needed. At Bay Audio, we provide high-quality hearing aid aftercare services – such as hearing aid repairs, battery replacements, and device cleaning – to help maintain your hearing device. Give us a call or visit your local store to ask about our hearing aid Aftercare Services today.

The sound from my hearing aid/s is intermittent

Sound from your hearing aid should always be clear and consistent. If it’s intermittent, you may have an issue with your batteries, or your sound channel may be blocked:

– Your battery may be low: replace the battery or, if your device is rechargeable, place it on its charger.
– Your battery may not be making contact correctly: wipe the battery with a soft, dry cloth.
– The sound channel may be blocked: clean the sound channel.

If the above solutions don’t help, you may need hearing aid repairs. At Bay Audio, our friendly team is dedicated to preserving your hearing health and maintaining your hearing device. Give us a call or make a booking enquiry to ask about our hearing aid Aftercare services.

The sound from my hearing aid/s is buzzing or crackling

If you’re hearing buzzing, static or crackling sounds, your device may have issues with its batteries, or you may be too close to interference (such as a digital or cellular tower).

– Your battery may be low: replace the battery or, if your device is rechargeable, place it on its charger.
– Your battery may not be making contact correctly: wipe the battery with a soft, dry cloth.
– You may be close to interference: Move away from electromagnetic fields, like digital and cellular towers, to ensure your hearing device remains on the correct program.

If none of the above helps, your hearing aid repairs may be needed. Give us a call on 1800 229 283 or visit your local store to ask about our hearing aid Aftercare services.

My hearing aid/s volume is not loud enough

If you’re struggling to hear due to poor volume output, you may have issues with your device batteries, your device may need cleaning, the setting may be incorrect, your device may not be inserted correctly, or your hearing may have deteriorated.

– Your battery may be low: replace the battery or, if your device is rechargeable, place it on its charger.
– Your hearing aid may not be inserted correctly: Remove your hearing aid and reinsert it. Use a mirror to ensure it’s inserted correctly.
– The setting may be incorrect: check the volume control and programs to ensure it’s set correctly.

My hearing aid/s have gotten wet

Moisture can damage a hearing aid, so if your device has been wet, follow these steps as soon as possible:

1. Remove from water.
2. Open the battery door and remove the battery.
3. Dry your device with a towel and shake gently to remove as much water as possible.
4. Leave your device in a safe place (preferably a drying container or hearing aid dehumidifier) for 1-2 days.
5. Make sure that the battery door is open.

If your hearing device becomes damaged, our friendly team at Bay Audio may be able to help. Call our friendly team on 1800 229 283 or visit your local store to ask about repairing your device.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get my hearing aid/s adjusted or repaired near me?

We have an extensive network of over 100 modern, accessible stores Australia-wide where you can visit us to get your hearing aid/s repaired or adjusted. Many of our stores are open for extended hours, including weekends and late nights, to ensure that your visit is as convenient as possible!

How can I adjust the volume on my hearing aid/s?

Many modern hearing devices automatically adjust the volume based on your environment, but if you’d like to adjust the volume manually, your device will include instructions. Most behind-the-ear hearing aids include a button on the back of the device to adjust the volume, while in-the-ear hearing aids can typically be adjusted by removing the hearing aid from your ear and adjusting the volume button as needed.

Some modern hearing aids include capabilities that allow them to be connected to an app on your smartphone. These apps are easy to set up, use and navigate, and give you easy access to volume controls.

Can hearing aid settings be reprogrammed?

Yes! When your hearing aids are fitted for the first time, our specialist audiologists can program your hearing aids to suit your needs. If you feel like you need them adjusted or reprogrammed, we’re always happy to help; simply revisit your local store or make a booking enquiry to let us know you’d like to adjust your settings.
